Effect of Diffraction in UT
G. Passi. Ultrasonic TOFD Inspection. 1. Basic Signals
The first in series of “back to the basics” articles on TOFD inspection technology introduces basic TOFD signals describing their nature and properties.
E. G. Bazulin, A. Kh. Vopilkin, D. S. Tikhonov Diffraction Waves in Ultrasonic Testing
Matters of interaction between an emitted elastic wave with reflector and a received signal are considered. Distinctive features and restrictions of the geometrical optics method against the method based on the geometrical theory of diffraction are also examined. The descriptions of TOFD (ultrasonic time-of-flight-diffraction) method and of its brother delta method are given. The experience of using arrays with prisms for generation of different wave types is of interest.
E. G. Bazulin, A. Kh. Vopilkin, D. S. Tikhonov Use of Wave Diffraction for Ultrasonic Flaw Measurements when Developing Coherent Algorithms for Reconstruction of Reflectors’ High-Quality Images
Matters of visualization and determination of reflectors’ actual sizes when UT are considered in the article as well as specifics of flaw detectors with phased array and detectors with digitally focused array while processing of measured echo signals. The detailed description of C-SAFT and M-C-SAFT methods realizations with the use of flaw detectors with digitally focused array is given. Examples of getting images of real and artificial defects are very good illustrated and give a complete grasp of ultrasonic flaw measurement possibilities.
Radiation Inspection
A. S. Serebryakov X-Ray Spectral Analysis with Use of Silicon Detectors
In this paper energy-dispersive analysis of X-ray spectra with the use of silicon detectors is under discussion. Comparison is made with the wave dispersive approach; three types of silicon detectors are briefly described including Si(Li) detectors, Si-pin detectors and SDD. Some attention is also given to the excitation systems for solving problems of X-ray fluorescent analysis.
I. A. Vainberg, E. I. Vainberg, S. G. Tsyganov Experience of CT Testing of Modern Products Made of Composites and Ceramics
Obtained by the authors CT images of new important composite structures and ceramic products confirm high information content of non-destructive CT diagnostics, which meets the challenges of research and development works, technology assessment, and quality inspection of modern composite materials of all types.
Thermal Inspection
V. P. Vavilov, D. A. Nesteruk, T. S. Domnenko Induction IR Thermographic Detection of Fatigue Cracks in Massive Steel Products
A short review of research in the area of a novel active thermal NDT technique involving induction (eddy current) heating of metals is presented. Experimental results on detection of fatigue cracks in rails and track frames of railroad cars are described.

Pipe-Line Inspection
M. Ph. Galiullin, S. D. Shevchenko, S. N. Vagaytsev, A. V. Paripsky, S. V. Sarazha New Concept of Technological Pipe-Line Diagnostics. Introduction in the JSC “Samotlorneftegas”
Results of a new approach to technological pipe-line diagnostics by continuous scanning are given in the article. The specialists of ZAO “NCTO” have used technologies of long-wave and electromagnetic methods in complex and the most up-to-date NDT equipment.
NDT in the Railways
A. A. Markov, A. G. Antipov Magnetodynamic Method for Rails Inspection
The magnetodynamic method for defect detection in rails, its history of development and functional capabilities are considered. It is shown that modernization of rail magnetization system enables to increase stability of method characteristics as well as defect detectability under severe conditions of testing (low temperatures, high speeds). High-repeatability of testing signals creates opportunities for automation of testing signals decoding.
